Traditional cultural celebration of the New Year in Thailand – a documentary film Songkran.
This video showcases how people celebrate Songkran in Pattaya, Thailand, on April 14, 2024 — an educational and cultural documentary film “Water Festival”.
The Songkran Water Festival, also known as the Thai New Year Festival, is an annual event held in Thailand typically from April 13th to 15th, and in Pattaya from April 13th to 19th. This vibrant cultural event brings people together to splash each other with water, respect their elders, and welcome the New Year with joy and enthusiasm. In Pattaya, people celebrate on the beach – girls wear swimsuits and bikinis – and many also swim in the ocean.
The true meaning of the splashes is to symbolically wash away all the misfortunes of the past year and thus start the new year from scratch. The significance of the white powder: it’s another ritual aimed at warding off evil spirits and protecting the owner. Thais usually mix the white powder with water and rub it on their cheeks, leaving a white mark.
